What is that quote from a US soldier? Something like: I hate you for burning a US flag, but I fought for your right to do so.

@89th said in Tourist vs Local photo locations: *Had a dessert that that I convinced myself at the time I would "bring to the states". It's called Granita, and essentially it's shaved italian ice (simple syrup, ice, flavoring) often served with a little warm cream on top. Almost like an icy-ish sorbet with a touch of cream. Compared to most desserts it's lightweight and not too bad for you, and was incredibly delicious and refreshing on a warm day. I still think one day it'll become known/trendy here! Sound somewhat similar to a dessert we have in Taiwan called (shwap-ping 礤冰) typically made with ribbons of finely shaved ice sweetened with condensed milk. You can enjoy it with a variety of toppings like seasonal fruits, ice cream, azuki beans, sweet potato chunks, aiyu jelly, and grass jelly.

(re: playgrounds being too safe. I know someone who is on a school board, and there are a lot of regulations that have to be followed for a playground. Ground has to have a certain amount of mulch or rubber. Certain distance between equipment, etc etc etc. I would guess that the way the US is, if a kid gets hurt on playground, the school would get sued for a lot of money. Not worth the risk for the school is my guess.)

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgeg39vr3j3o Two men have been jailed for stealing a £4.8m gold toilet from from an art exhibition at Blenheim Palace. Thieves smashed their way in and ripped out the functional 18-carat, solid gold toilet hours after a glamorous launch party at the Oxfordshire stately home in September 2019. James 'Jimmy' Sheen, 40, pleaded guilty to burglary, transferring criminal property and conspiracy to do the same in 2024, while Michael Jones, 39, was found guilty of burglary in March. The men, from Oxford, were sentenced to four years and two years and three months in prison respectively.

Along those same lines, Terry Moran, ABC journalist, tweeted something sanctimonious about Stephen Miller and got fired. The shocking twist is that his contract was about to expire anyway. Now he's on substack, riding the wave of publicity. I just heard him on the Trump hate podcast The Bulwark, where his profound humanity and virtue was discussed extensively, but his contract status at the time of his tweet was not brought up.

Micro-inequities are small, subtle behaviors or comments that communicate bias, exclusion, or devaluation—often unintentionally. These actions are usually not overtly discriminatory, but over time, they can have a significant negative impact on individuals, especially those from underrepresented or marginalized groups. Examples of Micro-Inequities: Consistently mispronouncing someone's name, even after being corrected. Interrupting or talking over someone in meetings more than others. Not making eye contact or failing to acknowledge input from certain individuals. Giving less praise or fewer growth opportunities to employees from certain backgrounds. Making jokes or remarks that subtly reinforce stereotypes. Why Micro-Inequities Matter: They accumulate over time, undermining confidence, morale, and performance. They can create a toxic or exclusionary work or social environment. They are often unconscious, which makes them harder to identify and address. They contribute to systemic inequity even when no single act seems serious. Contrast with Micro-Aggressions: The terms are related. Some use them interchangeably. Micro-inequities often refer to non-verbal or behavioral slights (like body language or omission). Micro-aggressions tend to include verbal slights or insulting remarks, often more emotionally charged. In Summary: Micro-inequities are the subtle, often unconscious behaviors that make people feel excluded, undervalued, or disrespected—especially in the workplace or educational settings. Over time, they can have deep impacts on inclusion and equity.

@jon-nyc said in What are you listening to now?: IHT There's famous story about the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham saying to a female cellist, "Madam, you have between your legs an instrument capable of giving pleasure to thousands and all you can do is scratch it." The old bastard would be cancelled nowadays.

@jon-nyc said in Speaking of MAHA: I wonder what the comparable number is in the US and Canada? I'd guess the US is much the same as the UK. The numbers are different, but this bears that out... https://www.visualcapitalist.com/ultra-processed-food-consumption-by-country/

My cards are not affected. Those charging pads work but are slow compared to a dedicated plug in wire, or usb wire-in which we have on our sockets (my wife informs me)

Pretty sure someone here posted that either those machines were rigged or that pillow guy was being persecuted. I always figured it was just the poster’s usual coffee and doughnut shop gossip and bluster. Apparently the courts thought similarly. Ha!
